INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A crash involving a school bus and a sport utility vehicle sent the SUV into a canal where it overturned and briefly trapped its driver inside Tuesday afternoon.

There were no children on the bus, and the woman driving the SUV had minor injuries after the crash at the intersection of 27th Avenue and First Street Southwest shortly after 2 p.m.

A deputy at the scene said the woman was able to crawl out of the SUV while it was upside down in the ditch, suspended just above the waterline.

The canal lined the south side of First Street Southwest and fresh tire tracks ripped deep grooves in grass leading to the crumpled SUV.

An Indian River County Sheriff's Office crash investigator talked with those involved in the crash. Its cause was not immediately available at the crash site.

There were two women in the school bus with no reported injuries from the crash.
